Developing an understanding of the curriculum statement

The original material for this paper was developed by Wellington College of Education, as part of the 1999 health and physical education curriculum implementation contract and was updated in 2002.

Introduction

The implementation of this curriculum requires the creation of positive learning environments and an acknowledgement of the bicultural emphasis of the curriculum statement and preserving the integrity of the Treaty of Waitangi.

The curriculum is underpinned by the whakatauki (proverb) –

''

He oranga ngākau, He pikinga waiora

''

Positive feelings in your heart will raise your sense of self-worth.
