Organisations

Local resources can provide social, cultural, or educational support forteachers who are developing classroom programmes on change, loss, and grief. Grief counselling or grief support for parents or caregivers or children may be available locally.

  • It is suggested that any counsellor recommended be a member of NZAC (New Zealand Association of Counsellors) or NZAP (New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists) and should have particular experience and skills in grief counselling with children.
  • The local hospice may also be able to help. Many hospices offer a bereavement service with trained counsellors or volunteers, and some offer a group for children.
  • Funeral directors are good sources of information about counsellors who are available, and they may offer a bereavement service themselves. They should also have access to groups with particular needs, such as Suicide Survivors or cot death support groups.
  • Libraries are the most obvious source of educational back-up material. Most will be able to provide a list of the available books on loss and change, including books on topics like divorce and ageing, and they may also have visual resources that help make these learning experiences meaningful for specific ethnic groups in the school.
