Key concepts in Making Meaning: Making a Difference

Socio-ecological perspective

In relation to health education, physical education, and home economics, students need to be able to:

  • challenge perceptions and assumptions that influence their personal attitudes, values, and behaviours and those of society as a whole
  • critically analyse determinants of health and examine their interrelationships in given situations
  • evaluate ways in which laws, policies, and regulations contribute to an equitable society
  • establish and justify priorities for action to enhance people's well-being in given situations.

Health promotion

In relation to health education, physical education, and home economics, students need to be able to:
identify situations where people's well-being needs to be enhanced and analyse these needs through adopting a socio-ecological perspective

  • identify positive outcomes in relation to the specified needs at individual, interpersonal, community, and societal levels
  • plan to take individual or collective action to achieve these outcomes by using their personal skills and establishing supportive links with other people and/or organisations in the wider community
  • take action, both personally and collectively
  • reflect on and critically evaluate the processes used and the significance and consequences of the outcomes.
