Planning considerations

In planning their class programmes, teachers will be guided by Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum (1999) and the learning needs of their students.

Teachers could begin planning by gathering a range of information about their students' current attitudes and values in relation to sport and by considering whether any of the possible learning outcomes might meet their learning needs. Teachers will need to keep in mind that students' learning patterns are shaped by their diverse experiences, values, and cultural beliefs. For example, students' experiences of the attitudes, behaviors, and expectations of their peers are likely to influence how the students respond to learning opportunities. Bearing such factors in mind, teachers can plan activities that will promote positive attitudes and values that are consistent with the Olympic ideals.
