Karapiro School

Every morning while the roll is being taken and they are having morning talks, the children in years 0–1 sit in a circle with a piece of fruit or a vegetable. The school encourages students to eat fruit that is in season because it is usually sourced locally. A tally shows what the children have eaten – for example, five pieces of orange. The children count up the tally of each fruit type, say the number of pieces in Māori and English, and show that amount on their fingers and toes. The children enjoy this daily ritual and have developed an awareness of good nutrition, tally systems, and counting backwards in Māori and English.
