Oturu Primary School

Oturu School is in a rural setting and its outdoor environment has been creatively organised to provide rustic and inviting places for children. More than 200 fruit trees and several big vegetable gardens have been planted, which the children help care for. Notably, olives are pressed into oil and then marketed. Children’s experiences in this organic environment foster an appreciation of how food is grown.

A registered wharekai for cooking is being developed under the five-year plan.

The school reflects an ethos of manaakitanga and offers children and their families a strong sense of partnership and whānaungatanga. Strong links are made with the local marae and parent community through consultation and regular school events and celebrations. Our students and community are discovering new foods, and ways to process them.
