What does learning in Health and Physical Education (HPE) look like?

The focus Health and Physical Education (HPE) aligns with the vision of the New Zealand Curriculum.

The core of HPE is supporting the well-being of students. Learning in HPE encourages young people to live full, active, satisfying lives.

Through your teaching, you help students learn to take responsibility for both their own well-being and the well-being of their communities.

Learning in health education, physical education, and home economics helps students grow as ‘"confident, connected and involved" lifelong learners, ready to contribute to their world.

Students will learn through interactive and practical activities that draw on their own experiences.

As they actively explore challenging situations, students:

  • develop knowledge and skills to promote positive well-being for self, others, and society
  • engage in a range of movement experiences that develop knowledge and skills apt for well-being
  • enhance hauora (well-being)
  • read about the dimensions of hauora
  • develop meaningful ways of coping with adversity
  • gain understanding of how to behave in a respectful, equitable, empathetic, and just way
  • learn to think critically and to problem-solve.
