Dannevirke High School

The school has recently opened a Breakfast Club. Principal Mike Tribe says there is plenty of data that tells him students perform better when they’ve had a good breakfast. “Kids who have a good, healthy breakfast do better throughout the day,” he says.

The Breakfast Club was suggested by three prefects, who saw some students turning up at school without having had breakfast. The success of the Breakfast Club is due to the full community support for the initiative. Student social worker Charmaine Wheeler organised some donations from local businesses. The owner of the local New World donated most of the food, together with the Christian Fellowship Church’s Hub.

Ms Wheeler explains, “Initially, teaching staff are helping out with the Breakfast Club, but ultimately the senior pupils will run it themselves.”
