Rata Street Primary School

In June 2005, the school introduced $5 breakfast packs after a survey revealed that up to 23 per cent of the pupils were skipping breakfast. The programme has since grown, and parents can come along to the school on Thursday afternoons to purchase boxes of cereals, bread, milk, and other breakfast staples at a cut price. Naenae New World provides the food at heavily subsidised prices.

Notices, flyers, and posters were produced in Māori and Samoan to promote the programme. It is run by a committed group of parents with the support of the regional public health nurses and the social worker-in-school. They are supported by the Hutt Valley District Health Board, the Life Education Trust and Regional Public Health.

As a result of the programme, teachers notice the children are achieving better in the classroom and are better able to concentrate.
